(Short stream of consciousness essay from February 2013)
I love the morning because it represents possibility. It’s the same reason I get a rush by going grocery shopping. There are possibilities for soups or experimental desserts, dishes that may go wildly wrong, beer to be drank with friends, countless unforeseen discoveries. I love gathering provisions for adventure and equipping myself for the possibilities. It’s the same shit I did as a child- choose worthy companions, gather the valuables, necessities and tools for running away into imagination. Now I choose a journal and research over a stuffed raccoon and bear.
Always, however, I seek and crave adventure but love the anticipation and preparation best. The 14 week training for a half marathon. Mapping out a route to the Great Smokey Mountains, Thinking about the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail. About moving cross country. About what to grab during a house fire. How best to thrust myself into the universe, face first, backpack contents carefully curated.
